Maria is currently the Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Children and Youth Services and to the Minister Responsible for Women’s Issues, Chair of the Ontario Women's Liberal Caucus, and a member on the Select Committee on Mental Health and Addictions and the Standing Committee on Public Accounts. Maria is also Vice Chair of the Economic, Environmental Policy Resources Committee, a member of the Rural and Southwest Caucuses and is past Chair of the Rural Economic Development Panel (R.E.D.). In addition, she also served as Parliamentary Assistant to the Minister of Agriculture, Food and Rural Affairs (responsible for Agriculture and Food) and to the Minister of Municipal Affairs and Housing. Maria has also served on various other government committees and working groups.
Maria served two terms as a municipal councillor for East Williams Township beginning in 1995. In 1996, she became a trustee on the board of governors for Strathroy Middlesex General Hospital. In 2001, Maria was Chair of the Board and Joint Executive for the Middlesex Hospital Alliance.
Maria and her husband, Rene, have four daughters, one son and thirteen grandchildren.
